Disclaimer: I wrote this as an intro to my blog in 2012, and although I should update it to something more professional and reflective of who I am now, there’s something about this tentative start to my “putting my writing out there” that I feel tender and protective about. It is still very much me and I still really like to be called darlin’…
My name is Jaime Alexis Stathis. I reliably answer to Jaime, Alexis, Stathis, and JAS, but often respond to variations on the above. I really like to be called darlin’.
I’ve wanted to be a writer ever since I read Little House in the Big Woods thirty years ago. I wanted to be Laura the girl as much as I wanted to be Laura the writer. I graduated with a writing and rhetoric degree in 1996, and thought I’d fall right into a glamorous writing career. Then I remembered that I was twenty-two years old and didn’t have a lot to say. I wanted to write stories—and I had some—but I didn’t have any distance or perspective to write about them. I’ve been busy since then. I’ve lived and worked all over the place, and all the while I’ve been intensely observing people. We are interesting. All of us.
A number of people have suggested over the years that I start a blog to document and write about my here-there-and everywhere adventures. I wasn’t into it. I wasn’t at a point in my life where I wanted to share my every move, and just didn’t understand the purpose of blogging. I didn’t read many blogs and didn’t understand the trend. I get it now.
I started this blog because I want in on the conversation. I have more than a couple incomplete books-in-progress. I write fiction and non-fiction, but any way you slice it: I love stories. I want to use this blog to tell stories, and I hope a conversation will begin and I’ll hear some stories from you as well.
I’ll go first.
